Funding available for a bilateral project with your partner school

Would you like to launch a bilateral project with your partner school in Great Britain or Germany? During the German Year of Science, UK-German Connection is offering special funds for work on the topic of 'Seas and Oceans'. Programmes like 'Instant Impact', 'Challenge Fund' and 'Partnership in Learning' are the most appropriate (programme-specific terms and conditions apply).

Instant Impact

The Instant Impact programme aims to support first-time visits by pupils and young people between UK-German school and youth partnerships. The maximum grant available is £1,500. This will be awarded to the travelling group and must be used towards their costs.

Main criteria:

  • At least 5 pupils/young people take part in the visit that lasts for a minimum of two full days (not including travel).
  • Participants spend at least 75% of the time during the visit in joint activities that are embedded within a thematic framework
  • There are concrete plans for the follow-up and development of the partnership

Applications must be submitted at least six weeks before the date of the planned visit. To apply, please download and complete UK-German Connection's application form

Challenge Fund

The Challenge Fund provides support for joint projects between UK and German partner schools, and is designed to inspire young people from the UK and Germany to get involved in relevant thematic interaction, collaboration and learning. The maximum grant available is £5,000 and is to be shared between the participating schools. In some cases, schools can bid for up to £6,000.

Main criteria:

  • The project activities take place within the context of a UK-German school partnership
  • At least ten pupils from both schools are participating in trips to the other country involving project work
  • Projects should include a strong element of joint investigation of overarching issues
  • The project includes a strong element of involvement of pupils in the conception, implementation and dissemination of the project
  • Both sides undertake trips to the partner institution
  • The period of time between the visits must be no longer than 8 months

There are three application deadlines each year: 31 January, 31 May, and 31 October.

Partnership in Learning

The funding programme Partnerships in Learning aims to support UK-German school partnerships undertaking a variety of educational activities in both countries, including peer learning, with a flexible thematic and cross-year approach. The maximum grant available is £5,000 and is to be shared between the participating schools.

Main criteria:

  • The project activities take place within the context of a UK-German school partnership where at least ten pupils from both schools are participating in trips to the other country
  • The activities have one thematic focus or incorporate several thematic aspects - different year groups can have different themes or focus on different aspects of a theme
  • The travelling pupils take on an active role as ambassadors and representatives of a wider group of young people
  • The project involves a broad range of young people across year and subject groups, with a focus on the active participation of younger year groups
  • Activities foster joint intercultural learning and offer a real opportunity for pupils to develop their skills and enhance their curriculum-relevant knowledge
  • The two visits must be clearly related and the period of time between the visits must be no longer than 10 months

There are three application deadlines each year: 31 January, 31 May, and 31 October.
