According to his lecturer at Manchester University, Michael Schmidt, Kei Miller used to “secretly go out and win slams in order to feed himself, fearing that if I heard he was a slam poet I would disapprove.” The lecturer would eventually become his publisher, and the student set out on a winning streak in the world of poetry, recently receiving the prestigious Forward Prize and abundant praise from critics, fellow writers and readers across the world.
Although Miller regards his fame as a slam poet with some ambivalence, the pace of the performance poet is as undeniably a strong feature in his published work as is an elegant and at times subversive diction.
